Monthly inflation — from low readings to high inflation, and now a disinflation phase

Argentina’s monthly inflation series is one of the clearest indicators of the country’s nominal regime. Because it captures the speed at which prices are changing in real time, it is especially useful for identifying shifts in inflation persistence, the erosion or rebuilding of nominal anchors, and the short-term credibility of macroeconomic policy.

From low inflation to gradual acceleration

In the early part of the series, during the early 2000s, monthly inflation remained at relatively low levels, with some months of deflation or only very limited price changes. This was a markedly different nominal environment from the one that would later emerge.

From 2004–2005 onward, however, a phase of gradual acceleration begins. That process intensified more clearly from 2014 onward, when monthly readings recurrently exceeded 2–3% and consolidated a persistent high-inflation regime. At that stage, inflation was no longer episodic or cyclical, but increasingly embedded in the economy’s nominal structure.

Escalation after 2018 and inflationary breakdown in 2023

Between 2018 and 2022, inflation dynamics became clearly more volatile and elevated, with several episodes above 4–6% per month and peaks exceeding 7%. This period reflected a severe weakening of the nominal anchor, amplified by exchange-rate instability, fiscal imbalances, and declining confidence in peso-denominated assets.

In 2023, the process shifted again into an environment of very high inflation, with double-digit monthly rates and a peak of around 25% toward the end of the year. This represented a major inflationary rupture, signaling that price-setting behavior had entered a far more unstable and extreme regime.

Disinflation from 2024 onward

Starting in 2024, the series shows a process of disinflation: monthly readings decline from double-digit rates to levels closer to 2–4% per month in 2024–2025. Although these levels remain high by international standards, they mark a significant correction relative to the previous inflationary peak.

From a macro perspective, this decline suggests that the stabilization regime has succeeded in reducing the intensity of the inflationary process. Even so, the current readings do not yet indicate full nominal normalization. Inflation has slowed sharply, but it remains elevated enough to continue eroding price signals, contracts, and real balances over time.

Structural interpretation

The sustainability of this disinflation will depend on consistency between monetary, fiscal, and exchange-rate policies, as well as on the credibility of the medium-term economic program. In Argentina’s case, short-lived inflation slowdowns have occurred before, only to be reversed when the broader macro framework lost coherence.

This means the key issue is no longer whether inflation has come down from its peak — it clearly has — but whether the country can lock in a lower-inflation regime without renewed exchange-rate shocks, fiscal slippage, or a reacceleration of inflation expectations.

Conclusion

Argentina’s monthly inflation has moved decisively off the extremes reached in late 2023 and is now in a disinflation phase. That change is macroeconomically significant and marks a clear improvement in nominal conditions.

Still, the country remains far from low and stable inflation. The next stage will depend on whether disinflation can become durable enough to restore a credible nominal anchor and move the economy away from its long-established high-inflation regime.
