Core prices are still rising, but the underlying inflation trend has weakened substantially

Argentina’s core inflation index measures the underlying movement of consumer prices after excluding some of the more volatile or administratively influenced components of the headline index. It is therefore useful for evaluating whether inflationary pressure is broadly embedded across the economy rather than being driven primarily by temporary changes in a limited number of prices.

Because the series is expressed as an index level, its absolute value should not be interpreted as an inflation rate. The relevant signals come from the percentage change in the index over time, including monthly movements, twelve-month changes, and the broader direction of inflation momentum.

Strong core price increases during 2024

The core price index increased from 4,568.16 in January 2024 to 7,808.71 in December 2024, representing a cumulative increase of approximately 70.9% between the two observations. This should not be interpreted as a full twelve-month inflation rate, since the series provided does not include December 2023.

The broad rise in the core index indicates that inflation was not limited to isolated adjustments in regulated or seasonal prices. Instead, price increases remained widespread across less volatile components of the consumer basket, reflecting a deeply entrenched inflationary environment.

Clear moderation throughout 2025

Core prices continued to increase in 2025, but at a considerably slower pace. The index rose from 7,808.71 in December 2024 to 10,392.49 in December 2025, an annual increase of approximately 33.1%.

Although an annual increase above 30% remained extremely high by international standards, the slowdown relative to 2024 was substantial. The data therefore point to genuine underlying disinflation: price levels continued to rise, but the speed at which they increased was significantly lower.

Monthly movements remained uneven during the year. Core inflation strengthened toward the end of 2025, with the monthly increase reaching approximately 3.0% in December. This showed that the disinflation process was not linear and remained vulnerable to temporary episodes of renewed pressure.

Renewed moderation in the second quarter of 2026

The index reached 12,010.32 in June 2026, compared with 9,111.30 one year earlier. This corresponds to a twelve-month core inflation rate of approximately 31.8%.

During the first half of 2026, the index increased by approximately 15.6%. Inflation momentum initially strengthened, with the monthly increase reaching around 3.19% in March, before slowing to 2.29% in April, 1.90% in May, and 1.57% in June.

This sequence is an encouraging signal because it suggests that underlying inflation weakened for three consecutive months. The June increase was the lowest monthly reading recorded since July 2025, although it remained slightly above the approximately 1.48% increase observed in that month.

Inflation persistence remains significant

Despite the improvement, a twelve-month core inflation rate close to 32% remains incompatible with conventional price stability. The continued rise of the core index shows that generalized price pressures have not disappeared and that inflation remains embedded in wage negotiations, contracts, production costs, and expectations.

Core inflation can also decline more slowly than headline inflation because it is less affected by temporary reversals in volatile prices. For this reason, sustained moderation in the core measure is particularly important: it provides stronger evidence that disinflation is spreading beyond a limited number of components and becoming more broadly established.

Structural interpretation

The trajectory from 2024 to mid-2026 shows a transition from extreme underlying inflation toward a slower, but still elevated, inflation regime. The cumulative increase in the index remains very large, but the annual and monthly rates derived from the series indicate that the intensity of price increases has fallen substantially.

The key question is whether the recent monthly moderation can be maintained. A durable normalization would require core inflation to remain on a declining path for an extended period, supported by consistent fiscal, monetary, exchange-rate, and income-setting conditions.

Conversely, a renewed acceleration in the monthly core measure would indicate that inflation persistence remains stronger than suggested by the broader disinflation trend. For that reason, the monthly rate derived from the index should be monitored alongside the twelve-month change.

Conclusion

Argentina’s core inflation data show meaningful progress. The annual increase in the underlying price index has slowed sharply compared with 2024, while monthly inflation declined from approximately 3.19% in March 2026 to 1.57% in June.

Nevertheless, underlying inflation remains high and price stability has not yet been restored. The latest readings support a constructive disinflation signal, but confirmation will require several additional months of low and declining core inflation rather than a temporary moderation.
