Private credit in pesos — from inflationary reindexation to early real recovery

The stock of peso-denominated credit to Argentina’s private sector is a key gauge of domestic financial intermediation. In a high-inflation economy, however, nominal loan growth must be interpreted carefully: rising balances do not necessarily imply deeper credit penetration, since much of the increase can simply reflect inflation, exchange-rate adjustment, and nominal revaluation.

Nominal growth with weak real expansion, 2020–2022

Between 2020 and 2022, the nominal stock of peso-denominated credit to the private sector increased almost continuously. However, this growth took place in a context of very high inflation, meaning that real credit remained, at best, stagnant and in several periods contracted. The banking system failed to expand financing at a pace sufficient to offset the loss of the currency’s purchasing power.

In practical terms, the financial system preserved nominal balances but did not meaningfully deepen credit relative to the size of the economy. This is consistent with a macro environment in which inflation, uncertainty, and regulatory distortions limited both the supply of long-duration financing and the demand for conventional peso borrowing.

Acceleration in 2023, but still dominated by nominal effects

In 2023, nominal credit growth accelerated sharply, tracking a phase of extremely high inflation and strong exchange-rate adjustments. Nevertheless, the combination of rising prices, very high interest rates, and elevated macroeconomic uncertainty limited the recovery of real credit.

Much of the increase in outstanding balances reflected nominal reindexation rather than a genuine expansion in loan volumes. That distinction is essential: balance-sheet totals grew rapidly, but the underlying depth of financial intermediation remained weak by historical and international standards.

Regime shift from 2024 onward

Starting in 2024, a regime shift becomes more apparent. As inflation gradually decelerates and nominal volatility declines, the stock of peso-denominated credit begins to grow in real terms, according to official data. This suggests that the banking system is no longer merely adjusting balances to inflation, but is starting to extend financing more meaningfully.

The strong nominal increase observed in 2024–2025 no longer reflects inflation alone, but also a genuine recovery in credit, driven by improved balance sheets and rising demand for working capital and deferred consumption. In other words, the latest expansion appears to include a real component that was largely absent in earlier years.

Structural interpretation

Even with this improvement, credit depth remains low by international standards. Argentina’s financial system still intermediates a relatively small volume of private-sector loans compared with economies that enjoy lower inflation, more stable funding conditions, and greater contractual predictability.

This means the current recovery should be interpreted as encouraging, but still incomplete. The consolidation of a broader credit cycle will depend on sustained disinflation, lasting macroeconomic stability, and the ability of banks and borrowers to operate under a more predictable nominal environment.

Conclusion

Argentina’s peso-denominated private credit has moved from a phase dominated by inflationary balance-sheet adjustment toward an early stage of more genuine recovery. The change from 2024 onward is therefore macroeconomically significant, because it suggests improving financial transmission and a partial rebuilding of intermediation.

Still, the process remains fragile. A lasting expansion in real credit will require that the current stabilization regime translate into persistently lower inflation, lower volatility, and greater confidence in long-term peso financing.
